Equipping God's People to Create Missional Culture

The Future of the Gospel – The Inaugural Missio Alliance Gathering in Alexandria, VA on April 11 – 13th

If there is one gathering that you want to put on your calendar for next year, it is this one:  The Future of the Gospel: Renewing Evangelical Imagination for Mission.  I know, because I have been working with JR Rozko and others in helping put this amazing time together.  We need this gathering for so many reasons.  In the missional congregations that I have an honor to work with, I find there are common battles we are all facing.  Common theological issues that we are wrestling with that need a nuanced approach.  We don’t need just practical help, we need deep theological engagement, which in turn shape our practices.

One of my favorite authors is Lesslie Newbigin.  As you may know, he spent about 30 years as a missionary in India before coming back to his home country England.  In those 30 years he had noticed that Europe had undergone massive cultural shifts, seemingly unnoticed by the church.  So after his return, he began speaking and writing in such a way to call the church to take culture seriously, if she wanted to see the kingdom of God become a greater reality.  As missiologist David Bosch has said, “if we take the incarnation seriously, the Word has to become flesh in every new context.”

Exploring the shape of a missional encounter with our new context in North America calls for asking fresh questions and engaging in dialogue about topics as fundamental as the gospel, humanity, Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and the Kingdom of God; all framed around the role of the Church in relationship to God’s mission in the world.  Here are just some of the people we have pulled together to address our current context.

Some of the topics that we will be addressing, besides the core of what was mentioned above, include:

  • Multi-class/Multi-ethnic Churches
  • The Church and Peacemaking
  • Religious Pluralism
  • LGBT Sexuality
  • Gospel/Kingdom/Salvation
  • Missional Theology
  • Women in Ministry
  • Discipleship
  • Polycentric Leadership
  • Church and the City
  • Preaching and the Missional Church
  • Missional Movements
  • Eco-justice
  • Missiology from the Margins
  • Faith and Politics
  • Living Locally
  • The Church in God’s Global Mission
  • Healthy Racial/Gender Leadership
  • Leadership and Neighborhood Transformation
  • The Role of the Holy Spirit in Leadership

Here is a growing list of sponsors for this gathering.  I trust I will see you there!
